We had heard rumors and reports that Nintendo was planning to release a new installment in the long-running Paper Mario series this year, but we still weren't certain just when we'd end up learning more about the project. Well, it turns out that the time to finally hear more was today.

Essentially out of nowhere, Nintendo formally unveiled the latest Paper Mario entry this morning, which is subtitled The Origami King. The game, as the title suggests, puts an emphasis on origami designs this time around with many new and old characters from the series now appearing with this look. Perhaps most shockingly of all, Paper Mario: The Origami King is out in only a little over two months and releases on July 17, 2020.

Here's a description of the story and gameplay that we can expect to see this time around in The Origami King:

The kingdom has been ravaged by an origami menace! Join Mario and his new partner, Olivia, as they team up with unlikely allies like Bowser and the Toads to battle evil Folded Soldiers.

Use the 1,000-Fold Arms ability to extend your arms to interact with the environment and solve puzzles. In battle, line up scattered enemies and plan your attack to maximize damage with the new, ring-based battle system that requires both puzzle-solving skills and a quick wit.

The announcement of Paper Mario: The Origami King will surely bring about a mix of emotions for many fans. While the series as a whole is largely beloved by many worldwide, the most recent two installments in the franchise, Sticker Star and Color Splash, were highly divisive. The popular consensus amongst longtime fans has been that the series needs to go back to its roots a bit more and be similar to the original Paper Mario and its sequel, The Thousand Year Door. Whether The Origami King ends up being what fans have been requesting for years at this point, it certainly looks promising for now.

We should be learning a whole lot more about Paper Mario: The Origami King in the lead up to release, so stay tuned. Until then, you can check out the game's first trailer above.
