PAYDAY 2: Legacy Collection Announced as Development Resumes
The CEO of Starbreeze has announced PAYDAY 2: Legacy Collection along with the announcement that the game is back in active development.
In a Steam letter posted earlier today, Mikael Nermark CEO of Starbreeze Studios has announced a few changes coming to PAYDAY 2, including continuing with the development of the title and introducing both paid and free updates.
Firstly, I want to focus on the introduction of the new PAYDAY 2: Legacy Collection which was mentioned in the letter. Nermark admits that he knows they’re breaking a promise, and “We do not do so with ease or take this lightly.”
He mentions that the company believed that interest in PAYDAY 2 would decline over time as they pushed out new internal titles, I imagine ones such as OVERKILL’S The Walking Dead. December 2018 saw development shut down completely for the multiplayer crime shooter.
Due to the number of DLC available, there was PAYDAY 2: Ultimate Edition which was a way to allow players to purchase the base game and all DLC until the next installment of the game launches. Which, as we’ve heard recently, could be in 2022 or 2023.
However, due to needing support in producing new content for the game, PAYDAY 2: Legacy Collection has arrived which has officially replaced the Ultimate Edition and still includes the base game as well as over 5 years of DLC content. The new collection seems to only be available to Steam users on PC.
However, if getting all of the DLC isn’t up your alley, Nermark has clarified that individual DLC will be available again starting later today. The game will also be getting a new update which will be revealed soon with a sneak peek. However, it’s not known if this is a paid update or a free update.
The start of the letter does address the issues that Starbreeze has gone through, mentioning the liquidation that forced the company to enter a reconstruction. The company has managed to keep itself running despite projected cash reserves looking to only keep the company going until mid-January 2019. All in all, it appears to have been a rough time.
PAYDAY 2 is available for PC, Xbox One, PS4, and Nintendo Switch, however, the new Legacy Collection appears to only be available to PC users, but more information is coming soon. As for existing Ultimate Edition owners, they’re automatically being changed over to the Legacy Collection.
