The Aksys and Arc System Works collaboration Persona 4: Arena has released to phenomenal sales in Japan. In it's first week, the game sold a combined total of 138,286 units across both consoles, with the Xbox 360 version counting for less than 10,000 of those. Remarkably, these sales are greater than the sales for every other fighting game released in Japan over the last four years.

No game in the almighty Street Fighter IV series has reached such heights, as Street Fighter IV, Super Street Fighter IV and Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition have only sold 124,000, 109,334 and 67,250 units respectively. It has also outsold Tekken 6, SoulCalibur V, Marvel vs. Capcom 3, and countless other titles from instantly recognizable fighting series.

This performance isn't surprising when you consider the widespread popularity of the Persona series in Japan. One has to wonder if the fighting game based on a respected video game series will be the next big thing for the genre. Persona 4: Arena will be available in North America on August 7th.
