A new report from Insider Gaming suggests that the highly anticipated release of Discord voice chat for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 will be made available on March 8th, 2023 with the deployment of update 7.00.

Discord has been available on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S for quite some time now, but the consoles only recently received the ability to use the voice chat functionality. With crossplay becoming more and more prominent in modern-day games, PlayStation users are eagerly awaiting the release of Discord as a way to communicate with friends on other platforms whilst playing cross-platform.

According to Insider Gaming's report, an anonymous source clarified the release date following the release of a new update for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 last week. Following the release of the latest update, the Discord mobile app appeared to show the option to 'join voice chat on PS5. Unfortunately, even though Discord hinted at the integration happening sooner rather than later, the source states that it won't be arriving until next year.

Version 6.50 is also reportedly set to release on January 19th, 2023, according to the anonymous source. However, they state that the upcoming software update is not related to Discord's integration, as "nothing suggests this is the Discord update”. It was also noted by Insider Gaming that the Discord mobile app suggested that the voice chat functionality would only be available on PlayStation 5, and not PlayStation 4, but this has yet to be confirmed by either Sony or Discord.

Discord's PlayStation integration was first announced by Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO, Jim Ryan. In a blog post early last year, Ryan said the company are "excited to announce a new partnership with Discord". He went on to express that the goal of the partnership is to "bring the Discord and PlayStation experiences closer together on console and mobile starting early next year, allowing friends, groups, and communities to hang out, have fun, and communicate more easily while playing games together".

For the time being, we recommend you take these details with a pinch of salt, as plans can always change behind the scenes at PlayStation.
