PlayStation Suspends Advertising on Facebook to Support Boycott Campaign
In support of the #StopHateforProfit campaign, PlayStation is joining other companies to put pressure on Facebook by halting advertising.
As easily the largest social media platform in the world, Facebook has only grown larger in its influence as a platform for connection and messaging around the world. In that light, the platform’s role in which messages it highlights has come into conversation in the last few months, with several corporations joining together to boycott the company’s inaction on addressing hate speech and other forms of offensive content. Like other companies like Microsoft (in light of its recent partnership with Facebook Gaming), Sony is joining in on trying to pressure the company to more effectively take action on mitigating hate speech on the platform.
In a report from GamesIndustry.biz, PlayStation has temporarily suspended its advertising on Facebook and Instagram in support of the #StopHateforProfit campaign on social media. In a statement, a PlayStation representative explained that the company has “globally suspended our Facebook and Instagram activity, including advertising and non-paid content, until the end of July,” in order to “stand for working (playing together for good).”
PlayStation is among many other companies that have recently decided to halt their advertising spends on Facebook in the past few weeks, which also includes other major brands such as Coca-Cola, Honda, Microsoft, and others. Specifically, the #StopHateforProfit campaign is aiming to put pressure on the social media platform to address its proliferation of content that spreads hateful messaging and misinformation.
Over the past few months, Facebook has come under fire from a number of organizations and groups over its lack of approach towards limiting (or outright banning) hate speech from individuals and groups. This is especially in comparison to its competitors such as Twitter and Twitch that have been taking a more proactive approach towards banning and limiting accounts, groups, and individuals that have been promoting or spreading hate speech and other offensive content through their platforms.
