Today PlayStation announced a new event focusing on the PlayStation 5 which will last around an hour next week giving us a first look at upcoming games to hit the platform. It has already been confirmed that the PlayStation 5 will be backward compatible to the PS4 with approx 100 titles available at launch with more coming along the way. With that in the mind in the past developers have released cross-gen games the year we get new hardware, but don't expect that for any of Sony's first-party titles moving to the PlayStation 5.

From Gamesindustry, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO and President Jim Ryan spoke on the companies philosophy behind generations of consoles. "We have always said that we believe in generations," said Ryan. "We believe that when you go to all the trouble of creating a next-gen console, that it should include features and benefits that the previous generation does not include. And that, in our view, people should make games that can make the most of those features."

It is important to note again that Ryan is speaking specifically for their first-party studios. We already know that third-party developers are releasing cross-gen titles later this year like Assassin's Creed Valhalla. Sony has still yet to mention how they will be handling cross-gen on that front, but we might learn more during the event next week. Xbox is taking the opposite approach with its first-party titles as it has already been confirmed that Halo Infinite is going to be available on both Xbox One and Xbox Series X. They are also implementing a program known as "Smart Delivery" which will allow participating developers and publishers to give players a free upgrade to Xbox Series X for those who originally purchased the game on Xbox One whether it be physically or digitally.

Sony and Microsoft are taking different approaches with the transition of new consoles so it will be interesting to see which one will end up being more attractive to consumers once we get closer to the end of the year. Both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are set to release sometime this holiday season.
