E3 2011: PlayStation Vita to be Region Free – Hopefully

on June 10, 2011 9:00 AM

One of the best things about Sony’s current platforms is that they are region-free. Want to import a Japanese PSP game? Go right ahead, it’ll play on any PSP on the planet. Want to pick up a super awesome collector’s edition of a game that was only released in Europe? Feel free, because it’ll play on any ol’ PS3.

With Sony’s new handheld, the PlayStation Vita, getting a lot of press this week, the VP of Sony Worldwide Studios Europe, Michael Denny, said “to the best of my knowledge” the Vita would be region free, as well. That phrasing is a bit dubious, but I’m going to put my neck out here and say that I trust Sony will do the right thing in this situation. The Vita is already a hard sell with all the other avenues of mobile gaming around, but if it is indeed region free, that would be an extra benefit of having one around, especially if you’re a fan of imports.
