Let the video game movie train keep rolling! Having been out since May, Pokemon Detective Pikachu has become the highest-grossing video game movie of all time.
The film has grossed $436 million worldwide thanks to its remaining showings in Colombia, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, and Solvenia. All together, the movie made over $7 million dollars this weekend thanks to showings in these countries. Detective Pikachu grossed $161 million dollars worldwide during its opening weekend, making it the best opening weekend for a video game film. The film has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 60% amongst critics and an 81% score from audiences. Additionally, a sequel to the film is reportedly in development. No details have been given about when the sequel will come out officially.
Prior to Detective Pikachu, the highest-grossing video game movie went to 2016’s Warcraft at $433 million. Other profitable video game adaptations include 2018’s Rampage at $428 million and 2016’s The Angry Birds Movie at $352 million. With new film installments in the Sonic the Hedgehog and Mortal Kombat franchises on the way, the rise of video game adaptations is growing. The question is will these and future game adaptations live up to the hype?
Pokemon Detective Pikachu is available on digital now and on releases on Blu-Ray August 6. The Blu-Ray can also be pre-ordered on Amazon right now. The film stars Justice Smith, Kathryn Newton, and Ryan Reynolds, and is directed by Rob Letterman. While the wait for the movie sequel continues, a new game in the Detective Pikachu series has been announced for the Nintendo Switch.
