Over the years, the Pokemon GO Halloween events have been some that trainers have most looked forward to. Historically, it's ushered in the release of new generations of Pokemon to collect. This has included the first lot of Pokemon from Hoenn, including Shuppet, Bannette and Sableye in 2017, the release of Spiritomb and more in 2018 and the first appearance of Darkrai in raids last year. Now, Niantic has shared details of this year's event, with the headline Pokemon being Galarian Yamask. Yamask is joining an elite list of already released Galarian Pokemon - including Farfetch'd, Meowth and Stunfisk. The event runs from Friday, October 23, 2020, at 6:00 p.m. PDT (GMT −7) to Tuesday, November 3, 2020 and alongside catching Galarian Yamask, will contain plenty for players to do.

As expected, as part of the event, Ghost Pokemon will be more prevalent in the wild, however, it's not clear which ones it will be this year. Alongside Galarian Yamask and the Ghost Pokemon, Spiritomb will be featured in research tasks and, for the first time, will be available to catch in its shiny form. Darkrai will also be returning to raids and both Gengar and Sableye will be able to be caught wearing Halloween costumes. Players will also be able to complete tasks in order to earn Gengar Mega Energy. Double Candy will be available for both catching and transferring Pokemon within the event period.

For those fashion conscious players, there will be a slew of new cosmetic items in the shop. These include a Gengar Onesie and a range of masks, including Pikachu and Banette.

There will also be three smaller events within this years event. On Sunday, October 25, 2020, from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m, even more Ghost-type Pokemon will be appearing and there will be a special "Catch Mastery" event. From October 26 to November 23 PVP players will be able to compete in the GO Battle League: Halloween Cup and on October 31, there will be a special Alolan Marowak Raid Day.
