About a week ago, we mentioned that Pokémon GO would be getting an event that would increase the possibility of encountering certain water-type pokémon on land. Following that news, and without a word of acknowledgement from developer Niantic, people began finding shiny versions of Magikarp, some of which weren't Magikarp at all! As the only shiny pokémon to be released on the mobile game thus far, it created quite the stir amongst fans, but we didn't know just how much until today.

That's right! Pokémon GO basically overfished the world's Magikarp population by nabbing 589 million of the little splashers, but don't believe for a second that it's going to end any time soon. Although the Water Festival event ended March 29, apparently those shinies are still out there, and players really want them. Thus far, there do not appear to be any other shiny pokémon available in Pokémon GO, but that doesn't mean you can't keep looking for your own sparkling Magikarp or maybe even the next shiny to drop.
