It's already 2019 in Japan, so The Pokémon Company decided to celebrate the new year by releasing the first trailer for the upcoming Pokémon the Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution. While the trailer is quite short, it should get fans of the Pokémon movies excited.

The brief trailer begins with some footage from the original premiere back in 1998 before cutting to some brand new scenes featuring Mewtwo. One seems to show the Pokémon open its eyes while still in a tank at the Team Rocket Lab, while the other featured clip shows Mewtwo chasing Mew through the night sky.

If this trailer has gotten you in the mood to learn more about the most recent Pokémon games set in Kanto, you can check out DualShockers' review of Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu!. You can also pick up Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! or Pokémon: Let's Go, Eevee! for Nintendo Switch on Amazon.

You can check out the first brief trailer for the movie below. Pokémon the Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution, or as it's known in Japan Pokémon the Movie: Mewtwo's Counterattack, is poised to hit Japan on July 12. If this movie follows the same trend all previous Pokémon movies have, it will eventually make its way west as well.
