One of the less well-known Pokemon in Scarlet and Violet is Ghimmighoul. They are relatively rare to encounter, and their evolution path can be a bit confusing. But you’ll need to do both if you really want to catch em’ all!

You’ll naturally come across two different types of Gimmighoul in the game - ones that give you Gimmighoul Coins, and actual Gimmighoul you can capture. This guide will walk you through how to find and catch Gimmighoul, and how to evolve them into Gholdengo.

How To Find Gimmighoul

As you are exploring the vast areas of the Paldea region, you’ll occasionally come across some red treasure chests. Like most games, you’d naturally think these contain some kind of treasure to use in the game. But in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, these red treasure chests are actually Gimmighoul Pokemon.

One of the easiest ones you can find early in the game is close to Mesagoza. From Mesagoza go west until you see a tall tower. Climb up the multiple ladders to reach the top where you’ll find a Gimmighoul that appears to be a red treasure check. Upon approaching it, you’ll enter battle.

How To Catch Gimmighoul

Gimmighoul can sometimes be tricky to catch. In some battles, you’ll be able to get them on your first attempt, while in others they may be resistant to normal Pokeballs, and are at the same time, fairly easy to KO. To ensure you don’t KO them right away, start by gauging how much damage your attacks do by attacking with weaker normal-type attacks. Once you get a feel for how much damage you do to their health, you can carefully chip away at their health bar until you get it into the red.

From there, you can catch them with any Pokeball type. Usually, a normal Pokeball will do. However, if you are struggling to catch them with a normal or great ball, try using a premier ball and that should do the trick. If you don’t have one, then just keep trying with your regular Pokeballs until it sticks. Before seeking this Pokemon out, make sure you have at least 10 Pokeballs on you since it might take several tries before you are able to capture them. You can also try paralyzing them first with a lightning attack as this sometimes helps with the chance of capture. Be persistent, and you’ll soon catch your very first Gimmighoul.

Gholdengo Evolution

Gimmighoul Evolves into Gholdengo

Unlike most Pokemon, you can not catch Gholdengo in the wild. To add them to your Pokedex, you’ll first need to collect 999 Gimmighoul Coins. You can find them all over Paldea in a couple of forms, the most frequent being the Roaming Gimmighoul Form - those not inside a chest. You can also find the occasional Chest Form Gimmighoul which will give you more coins, though they are less common. Once you have collected all 999, you just need to level up your Gimmighoul once, and it will evolve into Gholdengo.
