As the celebrations have been happening all month long for the 20th anniversary of the Pokemon series (aka its “#Pokemon20” event), one of the big new releases for the series this year is the crossover fighting game Pokken Tournament, and for fighting game enthusiasts around North America, you’ll be able to jump into the game early at special events starting next week.
The Pokemon Company has announced that in celebration of “Pokemon Day” later this month, next week fans will be able to get some early access to the upcoming Pokken Tournament throughout North America on Saturday, February 27th, 2016.
Eight participating GameStop retail stores will be hosting special preview events for Pokken Tournament with early access to the Wii U exclusive on February 27th, with the following stores participating in the event in North America:

During the event, competitions will take place for attendees with one winner from each of the eight regions to compete in the Pokemon US National Championships, with the tournament to take place from July 1-3 in Columbus, Ohio.
Any attendees during the event can sign-up and compete, though The Pokemon Company warns that “space is limited” at the events and entry in the competitions will be on a first-come, first-served basis. The Pokemon Company explained in more detail on the event:
“Players will be split into two age divisions: the Senior Division is for players born in 2001 or later; the Masters Division is for players born in 2000 and earlier. The winner from each city in each age division, plus one guest, will be flown to the Nintendo NY store in New York City on March 17 for the Pokkén Tournament Early Access Competition finals.”
The winner of the Pokken Tournament competition will receive a Wii U console, a copy of the game, and an all-expenses paid trip to compete in the National Championships in July. Registrations for each of the eight regional competitions will open at 10am local time, and go from 11am to 5:30pm (local time).
Pokken Tournament will release for Wii U on March 18th, 2016.
