Popcap, the developer of the hit Plants vs Zombies series has begun to lay off employees, parent company EA has confirmed.
The changes we made today at PopCap were painful and we’re sorry to lose some of our friends and colleagues. But it was also necessary in order to stay on course with our future plans for mobile games, live services, and new IP. PopCap is a studio that made its name building great games that the world can fall in love with, and that’s what we’ll continue to do.
A Kotaku source puts the number of employees layed off at between 30 and 40, although EA have yet to confirm this number.
This follows the launch of Popcap’s newest title Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare. Presumably these layoffs are part of standard industry practice, which often sees development teams downsized following a release.
