There’s been a lot of talk about the next generation of gaming consoles with nearly six years passing since the release of the PS3, 360, and the Wii. This is a pretty big gap between consoles compared to our gaming history. Kaz Hirai, however, doesn’t see it as a big issue with the PlayStation 3. “As regards home consoles, the PS3 was put into business in 2006, and it has a ten year life cycle,” said Hirai. That’s the basic thing we’ve heard since the PS3’s release.

This time though we get a more detailed expectation of that comment. Hirai continued, “This means that we aren’t even at the halfway point. There are certainly many more desirable first and third party titles coming out. As we announce and implement new initiatives on an annual basis, I still believe in the importance of improving the software and feature set of the PS3.”

“I think the value of the PS3 will continue to rise. Because of this, a near-future PS4 or next-generation home console is not something that we are even debating now. That is to say, we are still concentrating fully upon the PS3. Right now, I appeal to you to think of the PS3 and NGP as a new, co-operative partnership,” finished Hirai.

So for all those crying about not having the next generation of gaming consoles, simply wait around until 2016. (That is of course unless a fictionalized doom comes upon us all simply because a culture’s calendar ends). Honestly, I don’t see a problem waiting another 5 years for new consoles. It seems that the PS3 still has a lot left unfinished and the 360/Wii are still chugging ahead.
