PS4 More Popular Among Women in Japan; Sony Wants to Stay True to Core Gamers

According to Sony Computer Entertainment Japan and Asia President Hiroshi Kawano, the PS4 has gained popularity among female users in Japan, as he told Nikkei Trendy in an interview.

Kawano-san explained that while the increase hasn’t been enormous yet, the PS4 is being more successful than its predecessors with ladies. Until now many women in Japan preferred to purchase a console after new colors were released, while with PS4 they’re adopting it more aggressively from the get go, especially in the segment between the late teens and university students in their early twenties. That, according to Kawano-san, is a change in trends from the past generations.

While Kawano-san says he’s pleased to see the increase in female users, he does not want to stray away from the core gamer target, so he wants to keep the flow going with games that core gamers will be happy playing.

It’s worth mentioning that in Japan women haven’t yet embraced core gaming as quickly as they did in the past few years in the west, and maybe the upsurge in PS4 sales between ladies is also an indication that they’re starting to discover and enjoy gaming more actively.

Hailing from sunny (not as much as people think) Italy and long standing gamer since the age of Mattel Intellivision and Sinclair ZX Spectrum. Definitely a multi-platform gamer, he still holds the old dear PC nearest to his heart, while not disregarding any console on the market. RPGs (of any nationality) and MMORPGs are his daily bread, but he enjoys almost every other genre, prominently racing simulators, action and sandbox games. He is also one of the few surviving fans of the flight simulator genre on Earth.
