Even though the PS5 is out in just a few short weeks, Sony isn't done tweaking the PS4 just yet. As of today, a new system software update for the platform has rolled out, and as usual, a handful of new changes have come about.

System software version 8.00 is launching for PS4 around the world right now and the most notable changes it brings to the actual console deal with the party and messaging features. Detailed on the PlayStation Blog, both party and messaging functions will be updated when it comes to the UI. Rather than having groups split up amongst separate apps, Sony has now folded them into them both into one location, which is handy.

Likely the biggest new feature for many that has come about with this new system update will be the addition of new avatars. Yes, if you're tired of your same avatar tied to your account, now might be the best time to change it up. PlayStation says it has added new images from games that include BloodborneThe Last of UsThe Last of Us Part IIGod of War, and Ghost of Tsushima to name a few. Based on what I've already seen in the new avatar list, I think there are even some featuring Knack as well. God bless.

Lastly, there are a number of smaller changes that have been packed in here, too. Some of them deal with parental controls, 2-factor authentication, and community creation. All in all, it's your pretty standard fare with this system update. Nothing is going to drastically change your own PS4 experience here, but the tweaks are welcome nonetheless.

Anyway, your own PS4 should have likely downloaded this system update if it's in sleep mode, but if it hasn't by now, you should be able to go snag it right now.
