PS5 Pre-Orders Will Officially Start Tomorrow at Retailers [Update]

Following the confirmation of its pricing and release date, Sony has confirmed that pre-orders will go live at retailers on September 17.

[Update: It seems most retailers have jumped the gun and put pre-orders for the PS5 live, such as Best Buy, GameStop, Target, and Walmart. Check our PS5 pre-order guide for more info on where to lock in a pre-order.]

After a long wait, Sony finally delivered the news that everyone has been waiting for from the PS5: its price and release date. Thankfully, the company finally delivered with its most recent PS5 Showcase, and if you’re wondering when you’ll be able to put in a pre-order for the system, you won’t have too much longer to wait at all.

Following its PS5 Showcase today, Sony has officially confirmed that pre-orders for the PS5 will “be available starting as early as tomorrow at select retailers.” At the moment there isn’t confirmation on which specific retailers will be offering pre-orders for the system, but presumably we can expect major retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop, Target, or Walmart to be among the first wave of pre-orders for the console.

Geoff Keighley also noted the pre-order launch on Twitter, and added that pre-orders may even be opening up as soon as today at certain retailers, perhaps depending on the region.

Initially Sony had noted that it would give consumers prior notice to when PS5 pre-orders would officially go live. However, it seems a bit like those plans may have changed a bit and instead are aiming for more of a shadow-drop, compared to Microsoft giving a few weeks’ notice on pre-orders for the Xbox Series X and Series S. For now, I would stay tuned to major retailers over the next 24 hours and hope for the best.

The PS5 will officially launch on November 12, 2020 for select regions, followed by its worldwide release the following week on November 19, 2020.
