It’s 2018 and we still can’t change our PSN usernames. An oversight from Sony when first launching the PlayStation Network in 2006 has forced those who created their usernames when they were in middle school (like me) to be stuck with them for as long as they have continued to have that same account. Finally being able to change these names has been a highly-requested feature from many PlayStation players for years and it seems like at long last it could be coming in the future.

In a new report from Kotaku, it is said that three anonymous multiplayer game developers at three different studios have in recent months begun to fix various issues and settings associated with their games to prepare for the potential of name changes. Additionally, a fourth source shared documentation with Kotaku from Sony that shows a PSN profile with the prompt to “edit username” listed nearby. According to the source that shared this image, it was from a doc explaining how to change someone’s PSN username.

Even if the prospect of name changes is finally coming, there’s still no timetable for when Sony could implement the feature. If individual developers are required to first tweak settings on their end associated with multiplayer games, this could be a long process to fix all current and older titles that have released over the years.

This hasn’t been the first time that PSN name changes have been rumored over the years, so let’s hope that this can finally be the instance in which it comes to fruition. Lord knows I’ve been dying to change my own for nearly a decade at this point.
