Double Fine took to the stage during the Xbox Games Showcase today and in the process, they brought along a new trailer for Psychonauts 2 which featured a lot of new gameplay and some singing provided by the one and only Jack Black. Curiously, the only thing that was missing from the trailer happened to be a launch date, and now, we seem to know why.Originally slated to launch at some point in 2020, Double Fine has now revealed that Psychonauts 2 is instead slated to release in 2021. The news was shared today over on the official Xbox website. This is the second such delay that Psychonauts 2 has seen, as it was first planned to launch in 2019.

All in all, the delay is not too shocking to hear about, especially given how this past year has gone. Double Fine confirmed a few weeks back in a new update video for Psychonauts 2 that the team behind the project has transitioned to working from home, in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. While these changing work conditions surely may have contributed to the game's delay in part, it's also worth noting that since being acquired by Microsoft, Double Fine has been able to add more content to Psychonauts 2 as a result of having more funds at their disposal. With this in mind, the scope of the game has surely since expanded, naturally making the development last a bit longer.

Personally speaking, Psychonauts 2 was one of my most-anticipated games of the year, so I'm bummed that I won't be able to play it sooner. On the plus side, at least when it does arrive now, I'll be able to give it a whirl on the Xbox Series X. Conversely, the game will also still be coming to PS4, Xbox One, PC, Mac, and Linux once it drops next year.
