Psychonauts 2 Getting Distribution and Publishing from Starbreeze Studios

Payday 2 and Brothers publisher Starbreeze Studios announced that the company has acquired publishing rights for the upcoming Psychonauts 2.

Double Fine Productions’ beloved cult classic Psychonauts is finally getting a proper sequel with the upcoming crowdfunded adventure Psychonauts 2, with the game getting a new deal for distribution from Starbreeze Studios.

Starbreeze Studios – previously known for titles such as Payday and Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons – has announced that the company has acquired distribution and marketing rights for the upcoming Psychonauts 2 for its upcoming launch on PC and consoles in 2018.

Specifically, Starbreeze will contribute $8 million into the title as a major investor for the project, joining alongside Double Fine’s funding and the crowdfunding provided through the game’s campaign on Fig. Starbreeze will recoup its investment (including marketing costs) with an initial revenue share of 85%, after distribution/platform fees and the revenue share from Fig. Starbreeze’s share of the game’s revenue will then change to 60% after the investment is recouped, while Double Fine will retain 100% of the IP rights relating to Psychonauts 2.

Starbreeze CEO Bo Anderson-Klint added a statement in regard to the company’s agreement with Double Fine to publish and market Psychonauts 2, with Anderson-Klint explaining:

“Many of us gamers who’ve grown up during 70’s and 80’s have at some point come across the great games from Double Fine and Tim Schafer. Games like Grim Fandango, Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle, and Brütal Legend are all in the list of personal all time favorites for many of us. We’re very proud to be able to add this prominent collaboration to our Publishing business. Starbreeze is looking forward to support Double Fine in bringing the new and exciting game Psychonauts 2 to young and old gamers world wide.”

Double Fine CEO Tim Schafer also explained in a statement that “Starbreeze is the perfect partner for Double Fine and our backers on Psychonauts 2,” adding that “their expertise in not just developing and publishing games, but supporting them after launch will be a great benefit for players of the game.”

Psychonauts 2 is currently in development and planning to release on consoles and PC in 2018.
