Red Dead Online players have been holding virtual funerals for the game, following Rockstar Games' announcement that support for the online title would begin winding down. Today also marks the one-year anniversary of Red Dead Online's final major content update: Blood Money.

As part of a community update for Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Online, Rockstar Games said they are "in the process of making some changes to how [they] support Red Dead Online". This is due to development resources being moved towards the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series, which is likely to be Grand Theft Auto 6.

Following Rockstars' announcement, fans have begun holding virtual "funerals" for Red Dead Online on the one-year anniversary of what is likely its final content update.

The hashtag 'RedDeadFuneral' has even begun trending on Twitter, with thousands of players sharing their pictures and clips of their virtual funerals for the game. Many of the pictures feature players "mourning" in a graveyard, with others simply sharing some of their favourite memories of the game.

Although it's certainly a sad day for Red Dead Online players, support for the game will still continue to a certain degree. No major content updates are expected, but Rockstar state that monthly events will continue. The developers also said, "alongside seasonal special events and experience improvements — plus other changes to enhance and maintain a healthy Red Dead Online environment — we plan to build upon existing modes and add new Telegram Missions this year".

Red Dead Redemption 2 was also reportedly set to be released on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with visual improvements for the newer generation of consoles, but plans were rumoured to be scrapped following the poor reception of the GTA Trilogy remakes.

Rockstar seems to be putting as much focus as possible on the next Grand Theft Auto title, with their recent blog post stating that the title must "exceed players' expectations". Unfortunately, there's still no news on when fans can expect a teaser, release date, or trailer.
