Resident Evil Franchise Cumulatively Passes 100 Million Copies in Lifetime Sales

Resident Evil has become the first franchise in Capcom's library to hit triple-digits in terms of millions of units sold.

In the wake of revealing the latest installment in the long-running franchise, Capcom announced that the Resident Evil franchise has now passed 100 million units sold around the globe.

The information comes by way of Capcom itself who shared the details of this milestone in a new press release. First started back in 1996, Resident Evil has become the first series for Capcom that has ever crossed this 100 million threshold. The cumulative sales are comprised of every entry in the history of the franchise that has ever released across all various platforms, too. If it’s a Resident Evil game, it contributed to this total.

Capcom spoke about why it thought that RE of all franchises in its portfolio ended up reaching this mile marker, expressing that it was due to many different aspects. “For the Resident Evil series in particular, becoming the first Capcom series to surpass the 100-million-units-sold milestone came as a result of a number of factors; in addition to maintaining a consistent release schedule for new titles, Capcom utilized cutting-edge technology to reimagine beloved hits, such as with Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3, while carrying out price promotions for back catalog titles timed in conjunction with new title launches,” the publisher explained. It went on to explain that it looks to continue growing the series as next-gen platforms begin arriving while also acknowledging that Resident Evil 7 ended up surpassing 7.5 million units in total.

As for what’s next, Capcom just yesterday revealed Resident Evil Village, the eighth installment in the mainline series, which is set to arrive next year on PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC. Later this summer Capcom says it will be disclosing more information about Village at that time.

And if you’re looking for a more recent installment to get your hands on, the remake of Resident Evil 3 just released earlier this year and we quite enjoyed our time with it.
