The upcoming Resident Evil 4 Remake's Chainsaw Demo released on Thursday, and players some players are noticing it includes an exclusive difficulty mode that will appear seemingly at random when booting up the game.Players reported their findings almost immediately after the demo was released, with the enhanced-difficulty mode being referred to as Mad Chainsaw Mode, promising a more extreme challenge for those looking to test their mettle. The prompt for the mode specifies that it won't be included within the final game, and it only appears for a single playthrough at a time until it triggers again randomly.

While Capcom hasn't provided an official list of alterations for Mad Chainsaw Mode, some of the notable ones are enemies doing more damage and becoming harder to stun, as well as the iconic chainsaw-wielding enemy, Dr Salvador, becoming even more menacing with what looks like some kind of blowtorch-chainsaw amalgamation. Adding to the tension is the lack of checkpoints, meaning that if you die, you have to wait for the mode to appear again until you can give it another attempt.

Regarding the demo itself, it starts from the opening moments of the game and ends with the title screen pop-up following the village battle from the original game. It takes around 15-20 minutes to finish, and it can be played without any time or replay limitations.

The original Resident Evil 4, which first released in 2005 for the GameCube, has remained Capcom's highest-rated title of all time, and is also considered to be one of the greatest horror games ever made. It's since been re-released on every major platform following the GameCube (including Oculus Quest VR), so anyone looking to get their hands on the original before the remake releases has plenty of options.

The most recent mainline entry was 2021's Resident Evil Village, which was the eighth core entry overall, not counting the likes of Resident Evil 0 and Code Veronica. We awarded that game a great 8/10 score, and we later included it on our list of the 10 best Resident Evil games.

Resident Evil 4 Remake releases on March 24 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
