Sony's long-awaited PS5 reveal event was big on first-party exclusives, from the reveal of titles such as Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Horizon II: Forbidden West. However, in the midst of those reveals were a number of third-party titles, including the debut of Resident Evil 8: Village. While the title is confirmed to be coming to next-gen systems in 2021, Capcom shared a few more details on what we can expect from the next main installment of the series.

Following the game's announcement at Sony's PS5 reveal event, Capcom shared a developer video with a message from the producers of Resident Evil 8, Tsuyoshi Kanda and Peter Fabiano. In the video, Kanda and Fabiano shared a bit more information on what to expect from the new installment of the franchise, and how the next-generation consoles will bring this new horror vision to life.

Kanda and Fabiano addressed that the official name of the game is "Resident Evil: Village," but are still treating it as the eighth core installment of the series, as seen in the Roman numeral "VIII" in the title. The producers also confirmed that like RE7, the RE2 and RE3 remakes, and Devil May Cry 5, RE8 will be using the RE Engine with some enhancements for the next-generation consoles. Specifically, RE8 will utilize the power of the next-gen systems to enhance the horrifying visuals that players will experience to draw them further in with no load times between areas. The producers also mentioned that RE8 will feel a bit more action-focused this time around in its gameplay, and gave a quick glimpse at the inventory system, which will be similar to RE7 and RE2/3.

The producers also confirmed that RE8 will take place a few years after the events of Resident Evil 7, and will continue the story of Ethan Winters from his perspective. Chris Redfield will also return in RE8, but has a noticeably different physical appearance and a much darker demeanor compared to how we've seen him in the past. According to Kanda and Fabiano, Chris is "the reason Ethan's life gets turned upside down," and seems to be taking on more of an antagonistic role this time around.

In addition to the story and characters, the producers also expressed that the titular village that players will explore is a core component of the game. Kanda and Fabiano described the village as "very much its own character," and that it will play "a crucial role as the backdrop and setting of the game," adding to the eeriness and suspense that players will find in the next Resident Evil title. However, the producers closed out the video by saying that we'll get to know more about the game towards the end of this summer.

Resident Evil 8: Village will release for PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC in 2021.
