In a report from Deadline, film production company Constantin Film is producing a new adaptation of Resident Evil.

This time around, the movie will be an origin story set in 1998 in Racoon City. Director Johannes Roberts will write and direct the film. Robbie Amell (Upload) will play Chris Redfield, Kaya Scodelario (Maze Runner) will play Claire Redfield, Hannah John-Warren (Ant-Man and the Wasp) as Jill Valentine, Avan Jogia (Zombieland: Double Tap) as Leon S. Kennedy, Tom Hopper (The Umbrella Academy) as Albert Wesker, and Neal McDonough (Yellowstone) as William Birkin.

Prior to working on the Resident Evil film reboot, Roberts directed 2019's 47 Meters Down: Uncaged, 2018's The Strangers: Prey at Night, and 2017's 47 Meters Down. Sony Pictures' Screen Gems will distribute the film in America while Constantin Film will release it in German-speaking areas.

“With this movie, I really wanted to go back to the original first two games and re-create the terrifying visceral experience I had when I first played them whilst at the same time telling a grounded human story about a small dying American town that feels both relatable and relevant to today’s audiences," said Roberts.

Director Paul W.S. Anderson directed the live-action Resident Evil film franchise which started in 2002. The franchise starred Milla Jovovich and went on to spawn five more sequels. In a 2017 news story from Deadline, the film series grossed one billion dollars. Additionally, the reboot was confirmed back in 2017 by Constantin Film but no one was attached to it.

“After a dozen games, six live-action movies and hundreds of pages of fan fiction, we felt compelled to return to the year 1998, to explore the secrets hidden in the walls of the Spenser Mansion and Raccoon City," said Robert Kulzer, a producer on the film.

Currently, there's no release date for the Resident Evil film reboot. As more news comes out on the reboot, we'll be sure to let you know.
