Jedi: Fallen Order Could Have Been Delayed but Respawn "Wanted to Hit a Date"

Respawn Entertainment considered delaying the launch of Jedi: Fallen Order but "wanted to hit a date."

CEO of Respawn Entertainment, Vince Zampella has revealed that Jedi: Fallen Order was potentially going to be delayed. The comments come from a backstage conversation after the studio won ‘Adventure Game of the Year’ at the DICE Awards 2020 that took place on February 13, 2020.

Reported by USgamer, Vince Zampella admits that conversations about delaying the title were had. “Yeah, it was a conversation that we had and we decided that we wanted the game out there, we wanted to get it, you know, being out for the holiday,” he explained, “It’s a game that really fits that timeframe.”

The timeframe is no doubt a reference to the numerous Star Wars-themed products that arrived last year during the holiday season. Jedi: Fallen Order launched in November 2019, the same month we saw Disney+ arrive in the US. The streaming service offered, The Mandalorian which also launched in November. In December we saw Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019) hit theatres, as well as seeing Epic Games’ Fortnite teasing a clip from the movie pre-launch within the game itself.

Respawn Entertainment’s game director, Stig Asmussen also chimed in saying, “I think we’re in a situation [where] we’re trying to build a game for several different systems and we wanted to hit a date, obviously,” He says, “[W]e all look at it, and earnestly we feel like we could, if we had a little bit more time, it would’ve been better. But at the same time, we could play through it. It was good and we felt like fans were going to like it.”

We reviewed Jedi: Fallen Order and touched on the bugs and issues with clips included for added hilarity. Despite the bugs, prior to launch, EA predicted the title to ship 6-8 million copies by March 2020. Instead, 10 million copies of the game were shipped before March was even in sight.

Zampella tells USgamer what’s next for Jedi: Fallen Order. “What’s next is a celebration of this win.”
