After hinting at its next project for quite some time, Housemarque, the developer behind games like Nex Machina and Resogun, re-emerged during today's PS5 reveal event to announce Returnal.

Returnal is a roguelike that follows a female main character who is trapped on a dangerous planet. The trailer showed this character living, fighting against hordes of alien enemies, and then dying, before being brought back to life and starting over, much in typical roguelike fashion. The video featured some brief snippets of gameplay as well, which looked incredibly impressive running on PS5 hardware.

Here's a description of the game:

"Returnal combines side-scrolling action with roguelike gameplay into a third-person shooter where players fight to survive a hostile planet that changes with every death. Players can switch instinctively between firing modes by using a single adaptive trigger and can get right back into the action after dying. PS5's immersive 3D audio brings the alien world to life around the player, helping players navigate the intense positional combat."

Perhaps most noteworthy, Returnal is being published by PlayStation Studios and will be exclusive to the PS5 platform. Housemarque in recent years has been teasing that it was working with a mysterious publisher, and as many guessed, that company ended up being Sony. Considering the past relationship between PlayStation and Housemarque, this shouldn't be considered much of a surprise at all.
