Kids are filled with creativity and ideas that adults probably aren't even capable of comprehending. And what a better way to expand those minds through video game creation? That's why Girls' Game Lab is hosting an event this month up in Edinburgh for girls aged 8-12 where they'll be taught how to make games by developers working at Rockstar North. Those attending the free event will be learning how to come up with a plot and characters for their game, as well as being given access to Rockstar North's assets or creating their own to design a look and feel of a game. They'll also be using a free app Stencyl to program characters while also learning about basic animation, designing a level and its mechanisms. They'll also be able to see a showcase of local game developers' games.

While Rockstar Games' most popular titles have been 18+ games such as Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 the quality of the games has been brilliant. Being able to give girls an insight into how they create these stunning worlds, even if they're not old enough to play them, is a great opportunity, especially for those who may wish to go on and design games. In fact, the UKIE has recently seen that the UK gaming industry is currently dominated by 70% of males.

Those attending might also stand a chance at seeing Dan Houser, who was last night was reported to be leaving the company in March 2020. The company is also looking for new employees to work on a new open-world game.

Girls' Game Lab has been running these events since August 2019 where they held an event at Playground Games in Leamington Spa. Another event took place at Jagex in Cambridge. The workshop at Rockstar North will be free for those wanting to attend and requires the people going to sign up through the Eventbrite website. It'll take place on February 22, 2020, from 11:30 – 16:00 GMT.
