Roles Reversed: Play as Pauline in Donkey Kong

March 11, 2013

It’s funny that I recently reported on Anita Sarkeesian’s new YouTube series Tropes vs Women in Video Games, where she dissects the portrayal of women in games, for better or worse, and then I came across this [thanks to GameInformer]: a father got his daughter to love old school games like Donkey Kong, but she got bummed out that she couldn’t play as Pauline and save Mario. So, like any awesome father, he decided to hack the ROM, replacing Mario with Pauline.

Below is a video detailing his efforts and showing off the gameplay. And honestly, how awesome is it?

Masoud House

Born and raised in video games and "geek culture," Masoud has been bred off of fantasy worlds his entire life and doesn't see anything wrong with that. He loves RPGs (especially TRPGs), sandbox games, the sci-fi genre, dieselpunk, art deco, and anything that allows him to create. Having graduated from John Jay College with a degree in English and a minor in Creative Writing, Masoud hopes to one day pen the same novels, comics, movies, and video games he enjoys escaping into when the real world gets too boring.
