Root Film, Penned by Clock Tower’s Hifumi Kono, Got Announced in the West for PS4, Switch
Root Film was unsurprisingly announced in the west, seeing Root Letter's worldwide popularity, but with no release estimate yet.
PQube and Kadokawa Games announced Root Film will be launching on PS4 and Switch in North America and Europe. No release date estimate was shared yet. Root Film was first revealed during the Kadokawa Games Dai Kanshasai 2019 on October 19. The game will launch in Japan for the same platforms, in Spring 2020.
Root Film is the spiritual successor of Root Letter and features two protagonists, a rising film director named Rintaro Yagumo, and a talented but young actress named RIHO. Rintaro is voiced by Wataru Komada, who is notorious for his role as Jyuto Iruma in rap franchise Hypnosis Mic. RIHO is voiced by Himika Akaneya, a seiyuu idol member of i☆Ris, notorious for idol franchise PriPara. The five other members of i☆Ris all voice the rest of the main cast of Root Film. Azuki Shibuya most notably voices a male character. We’ve translated and detailed everything about Root Film‘s story and characters in our article covering the Japanese announcement.
Root Film‘s scenario is written by Hifumi Kono, the creator of the Clock Tower horror series. He most notably mentioned on Twitter that Root Film will be his biggest masterpiece. Judging by what we’ve seen of it so far, Root Film definitely has a bigger horror visual novel feel to it than Root Letter.
PQube most notably revealed Root Film has a mechanic called Zapping. It’s a puzzle-solving mechanic that lets players see the perspectives of two characters at the same time, most probably Rintaro’s and RIHO’s perspectives. Zapping will be an essential part of the gameplay and seems pretty inspired by Eve Burst Error‘s and the Eve series’ dual protagonist system.
PQube also published an English version of Root Film’s launch trailer, you can find it below. Judging by past PQube localizations, I’d say Root Film will be launching in late 2020 in the west. But no official info on an estimate was shared yet.
