Rune Factory 5 Launches in 2021 On Switch, First Gameplay, Screenshots

Marvelous announced Rune Factory 5 is now coming in Spring 2021 in Japan, simply "2021" in the west, exclusively on Nintendo Switch.

At the Nintendo Direct Mini: Partner Showcase on September 17, Marvelous announced Rune Factory 5 will be launching  in the west in 2021, revealing some of the characters and some gameplay for the very first time. The game will be coming in Spring 2021 in Japan. We have some details and screenshots from the English and Japanese press releases below.

Rune Factory 5 will feature a male or female amnesic protagonist, the usual. It uses a 3D world similar to Rune Factory Oceans (Tides of Destiny). Multiple additions were made to the battle system, and you can now enact combo attacks with your accompanying ally. Needless to say the romance and marriage system is back as well.

The protagonist of RF5 is a peacekeeping ranger, protecting the rural town of Rigbart. Everything that was present in past Rune Factory (and most Story of Seasons) games is back: taming monsters, teaming up with NPCs, farming, fishing, crafting, etc. In the Japanese press release, Rune Factory 5 is described as a single player Fantasy Life Game. No CERO or ESRB ratings were set yet.

The reveal trailer is included below. We have the Japanese version of the trailer and the English version:

The opening theme song heard in the trailer is Beyond the Blue Yonder by Joe Rinoie.

Rune Factory 5 was first announced in February 2019 alongside the Switch enhanced version of Rune Factory 4 Special (Review). Be sure to check out our introduction guide to the series if you have no idea where to start. Producer Maekawa previously mentioned how players with a Rune Factory 4 Special save can link their save to unlock two guest characters in Rune Factory 5. While each Rune Factory game is standalone, each game always features guest characters from past games, so it’s very likely there will be other guest characters appearing even if you don’t link your RF4S save.

Rune Factory 5‘s situation was a bit worrying as the series’ official Twitter didn’t tweet until now since December 12, 2019. Everyone expected the game to be delayed to 2021, and it did, despite the latest financials from Marvelous claiming it was coming in 2020 in Japan. At the very least we finally have more info now.

XSeed Games and Marvelous America are handling the American release. The Europe release is handled by Marvelous Europe.
