Skunkape Games has announced today that it will be releasing Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse Remastered at some point in 2023.In a teasing tweet via the developer's official Twitter account, Skunkape Games released a short trailer for the upcoming remaster. The trailer is an odd one for those unfamiliar with the game as it shows several scenes from Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse with various ringing phone sound effects playing over each one.
The trailer ends with a simple "2023" though there's no actual release window, nor have any platforms been confirmed, though it's safe that Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse Remastered will most likely follow the previous games in the series and release on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse was originally developed by Telltale Games in the defunct studio's signature episodic fashion with the complete story being told over the course of a five-episode season. The Devil's Playhouse was the third season in the Sam & Max episodic game series, and it would be the last to be developed under Telltale Games.
After the original Telltale Games closed its doors in 2018, the series and rights to the games were left in limbo. In 2020, several former Telltale Games developers who worked on the original series banded together and formed Skunkape Games, and subsequently acquired the rights to the episodic games. Since then, Skunkape Games has released Sam & Max: Save the World Remastered and Sam & Max: Beyond Space and Time Remastered. Now, the developer is coming full circle with the upcoming release of Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse Remastered in 2023.
Fans will be wondering, then, what next for the hare and the hound detective duo? With no more episodic entries to remaster, it may be time for Skunkape Games to develop a brand-new entry in the series, or perhaps the developer will go another way and do something completely different.
