She Remembers Caterpillars is an indie puzzle game with a vibrant aesthetic and interesting narrative. The game recently released on Steam and was accompanied by a launch trailer. The devs, jumpsuit entertainment UG, also had their game picked as an honorable mention for this year's Independent Games Festival awards.

The main theme of this title is to guide your colored 'Gammies' to the white ending vines. Along the way you'll come across the titular caterpillars, who also sport bright hues.

Sometimes they act as bridges and other times as barriers, but they will only let certain colors through. Gammies can combine to create new parts of ROYGBIV and can be transformed by objects on the field.

The story will be hinted at throughout your quest. The Gammies exist in a 'dreamscape' world that somehow links to the real world. There's mumblings of a horrible accident and a 'scientist’s quest to save her father'.

The art-style is by far the most apparent part of She Remembers Caterpillars. The devs describe their world as being part of a 'fungipunk' aesthetic and the dreamscapes having a 'phantasmagorphic' feel. The Gammies and caterpillars really standout with their neon like colors and the muted (and somewhat Gothic) backgrounds intensify the juxtaposition of the two.

The game also sports:

  • Gorgeous artwork from Symmetrain (IGF 2014 Student Showcase Award) creator Daniel Leander Goffin.
  • 40 levels of brain-bending puzzles, with each new act presenting a fresh mechanic or a different color.
  • A haunting soundtrack by Thomas Höhl, composer for Galaxy On Fire and the well-known Deponia (1–3) franchise.
  • She Remembered Caterpillars can easily be played by the color-blind, thanks to its unique usage of shapes and symbols

For a game caught up in amazing reds, yellows, and blues it's nice to see the developers take those who can't perceive that spectrum fully into account.

The game is currently available on Steam for $11.99 USD. But if you purchase it before Jan 24th, you can add a 20% discount to your total. So what do you say, will you be saving Gammies while playing in your jammies?
