The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is less than two weeks away and as we near release, more information continues to come out. Today, we heard a bit more about the development process in a recent interview with some of the game’s creators.
Shigeru Miyamoto and Eiji Aonuma recently spoke about Breath of the Wild in an interview with Game Informer and they talked about the difficulty of balancing fan feedback on previous Zelda titles while also trying to keep their vision for the next game intact. Aonuma mentioned the feedback he received from one fan in particular after Skyward Sword and how that shaped his vision for Breath of the Wild saying:
For me, it definitely changed. I’ve felt like there are ways that the game should be and I’ve stuck to it for a very long time, but then before I started developing Breath of the Wild I realized there is a little bit of a gap between fan feedback and what my strategy was. So there was something that the fans said before starting development that changed what I thought. There was a fan that said he really, really, loved Zelda. But, while playing Skyward Sword, he missed experiencing this huge world where he could just ride Epona around. During Ocarina of Time, he really loved doing that. And somewhere within myself, I felt the same way. So for Breath of the Wild, it’s something that I definitely thought about.
Later in the interview, both Miyamoto and Aonuma were asked about which aspects of Breath of the Wild they were most excited about personally. Miyamoto spoke first about his love for the game’s animals saying:
Starting with Ocarina of Time, and you can see my shirt (motions to shirt with Epona and Link on it), I really loved Epona and all of the animals in the world. In Breath of the Wild, there was actually a dedicated designer and programmer just to create the animals. And there’s many, many different types of animals. Even with horses, you really get to know and link with the horse. You have to find them, and raise them, and ride them. Even with other animals, you have to decide whether you want to just view them or (when you get hungry) hunt them. You’ve got to make choices. And when you look up at the sky, you see birds. They’re on their way somewhere. It’s fun to just wonder where are they going to end up, where are they going?
Aonuma answered the same question talking specifically about one of the game’s new items.
For me, it’s the hang glider. I’m actually really scared of heights, so this is something I can’t do in my real life. So, in the game, being able to jump off a high place and fly around is definitely something that I can’t experience on my own. I had a lot of fun.
There’s been a lot of other Breath of the Wild news this past week including the announcement of a season pass and the release of a new TV commercial for the game in Japan. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is out on March 3 for both the Nintendo Switch and Wii U.
