In an interview with IGN about The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Shigeru Miyamoto commented on what we may see next from the Super Mario Bros. series.

"We're always challenging ourselves to create something new, so hopefully you'll see a new kind of Mario in about a year or two. Maybe next E3 we'll be able to share something."

That being said, Miyamoto did explain how there are many challenges that have to be faced when modifying the Mario formula.

"It's kind of difficult with Mario because some of the more important conventions of Mario are based on the approachability and accessibility of those games."

He also mentioned that hiring new employees has helped because it allows Nintendo to look "at the conventions with fresh eyes."

We will definitely inform you when a new Super Mario Bros. game is officially announced.  That latest game in the series, Super Mario Maker, is out now on Wii U.
