Shovel Knight: King of Cards Comes to Switch in Early 2018 [UPDATED]

Yacht Club Games has given us the first details on the final expansion for Shovel Knight.

August 30, 2017

During today’s Nindies Summer Showcase 2017 live stream, we received some new information on the final expansion for Yacht Club Games’ smash hit Shovel Knight.

This new expansion for Shovel Knight is titled King of Cards and centers around the character King Knight. While fans have known the concept behind this new campaign for some time, we haven’t seen much footage of what it will look like until today. The Nindies Summer Showcase only showed off thirty seconds or so of King of Cards, but we do get to see King Knight in action as well as seeing a trading card element to the game, which was unexpected. Lastly, we learn that King of Cards will be arriving on Switch in early 2018.

Earlier this year, Yacht Club Games restructured the way in which they sell Shovel Knight and rebranded the full game as Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove. Those who purchase Treasure Trove receive the base game of Shovel Knight in addition to its three expansions Plague of ShadowsSpecter of Torment, and now King of Cards. If you prefer to purchase each of these additional campaigns separately though, you are able to do so.

As for when King of Cards may come to other platforms, we currently don’t know. Specter of Torment came first to Nintendo Switch before later arriving on other platforms earlier this year, so the same might be the case for this next campaign. We will let you know when we have confirmation one way or another.

UPDATE: After the Nindies stream ended, Yacht Club Games posted a variety of new details and screenshots for King of Cards on their official website.

To begin, we get quick synopsis of what King of Cards will entail:

Shovel Knight: King of Cards is the final campaign in the Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove saga, and it’s bigger and grander than ever! Step into the regal shoes of King Knight, the Gilded Goon himself, as you shoulder bash and spin jump through all those who would oppose your reign! Travel through 4 new worlds and more than 30 all new courses, all on a journey to best the “Three Kings” who lord over the land.  Discover what it takes to become a true monarch, meet a friend or two, and amass a King’s ransom in items and loot! Refined platforming, exquisite visuals, story with heart, action-packed courses, glorious new bosses and more await in Shovel Knight: King of Cards!

Yacht Club also gives us some more detailed features that will be unique to King of Cards compared to the other Shovel Knight campaigns. They are as follows:

  • Tackle enemies and obstacles head on with your signature bash attack and finish them off with a dazzling spinning strike! King Knight’s play style is all about bashing, bouncing, and bounding!

  • Collect tons of new weapons, armors, abilities, and followers to look your dandiest as you pummel foes with radiant skill.

  • Had your fill of glamorous adventure? Unwind and sharpen your strategic mind by competing in card battles with future subjects from across the land.

  • Test your skills with Feats and Challenge Stages featuring Boss rematches, platforming challenges, and more.

  • Yacht Club Game’s beautifully authentic style bridges the gap between yesterday and today. Design, art, and audio hearken back to the days of 8-bit.

  • Awesome soundtrack by Jake “Virt” Kaufman!

  • Balanced gameplay is a warm welcome to newcomers, and an old embrace for experts.

  • Lovable characters and bosses!

  • Take on a new challenge and uncover all of the world’s secrets with New Game+!

Last but not least, we also received five new images from King of Cards showing off a variety of different areas in the game. From a boss fight, to some platforming sections, and even the new card battle system, these pictures, which you can find at the bottom of the page, continue to show off Shovel Knight’s charming and gorgeous art style.

If you’re at PAX West this coming weekend, be sure to run by the Yacht Club Games booth as you will be able to get some hands on time with King of Cards ahead of release.
