Shovel Knight Coming to Nintendo Switch; New Updates, Two-Player Co-op, and More Announced

The acclaimed 2014 2D platformer has been confirmed for a new version coming to Nintendo Switch, along with numerous updates on previous platforms.

Back in 2014, Shovel Knight took the world by surprise with a charmingly old-school take on 2D platforming to great critical and commercial success, with developer Yacht Club Games continuing to expand support for the game in a variety of ways this year.

In a blog post on the studio’s website, Yacht Club Games has revealed that Shovel Knight will be coming to Nintendo Switch this year (as is the new upcoming expansion, Shovel Knight: Spector of Torment), alongside a bevy of other announcements for new modes, campaigns, and other content expected throughout the year.

Yacht Club Games first revealed that a new Body Swap Mode will be added to the game to allow different skins and body swaps for playable characters, such as the first two revealed for Shovel Knight and Shield Knight. Along with that, the console and PC versions of the title (excluding 3DS and PS Vita) will also be adding two-player local co-op to allow two Shovel Knight friends to complete levels and overcome enemies.

Aside from Body Swap Mode and a co-op option, Yacht Club’s blog also revealed additional content coming to Shovel Knight with the upcoming King Knight campaign (final name TBD) and Battle Mode, which will allow up to four players to duke it out in arenas on all platforms (except 3DS and PS Vita).

Yacht Club will also be implementing some larger updates for the game moving forward in how it will release and distribute the new campaigns for Shovel Knight, as the company will be offering standalone options for each of the game’s campaigns on PS4, Xbox One, PC, Mac, Linux, and Nintendo Switch. Specifically, Yacht Club revealed that the all-in-one package for Shovel Knight and its expansions will be renamed to Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove – players that already own a copy of the game will automatically receive the Treasure Trove version of the game, along with any updates/new content for free.

Treasure Trove will include the original base game (which will be renamed to Shovel Knight: Shovel of Hope) alongside its Plague of Shows expansion from last year and this year’s Specter of Torment, along with all of the game’s other planned updates (like Body Swap Mode, Battle Mode, and two-player co-op) as free content for players that own Treasure Trove. The price of the original game will increase this spring to accommodate the upcoming expansions and new content for new players, so if you don’t have the title currently you can pick it up now and receive the additional free content and updates as they release later this year.

Shovel Knight is available now for PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360, PC, Mac, Linux, Wii U, 3DS, PS Vita, and Amazon Fire TV – a Nintendo Switch version of the game will also be arriving this spring.
