With the release of the trailer for Bloober Team’s upcoming Silent Hill 2 remake, a long-buried fan theory has been cast into the limelight once more. It’s been heavily speculated by fans over the years that the game’s protagonist, James Sunderland, looks at the player through the mirror’s reflection in the game’s opening scene. However, Silent Hill artist Masahiro Ito has now debunked this theory once and for all. James don’t look at the player.” He attached a high-contrast image of the scene from the original Silent Hill 2.

In later tweets, he added “I’m so fed up with this” and “In the first place, why does he have to see the player who exists out of the story? He is now there looking for his wife. Consider the context of the story.”

A Twitter user claimed that Ito wouldn’t have had anything to do with the mirror scene as his focus was on monster design. Ito provided a response, explaining just how much influence he had on Silent Hill 2.

“Excuse me, I directed all of the cutscenes, had something to do with the creatures and other cutscenes. Some of the ideas in the story were by me. Also, much of the lighting was done by me. All keyframe animations of the creatures were by me” he revealed.

Masahiro Ito worked on Silent Hill 1-4 and will be returning to work on Bloober’s Silent Hill 2 remake. Joining him on the remake is Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka.

Along with the Silent Hill 2 remake, an "interactive media experience" Silent Hill: Ascension, and a new game entitled Silent Hill: Townfall were also announced.
