Fans of the 64 era of 3D adventure games and chatty mascots should take notice of this release. Skylar and Plux: Adventure on Clover Island just launched on PC, Xbox One, and PS4. The game retails for $14.99 USD on all three systems but each one has a different early buyer deal that range from 30-35%.

Coupled with the release is a new trailer that shows off the action and banter that can be found in the game. There's the usual platforming with lava, pits, and the option to have floaty jumps. There also seems to be physics puzzles and death traps to keep things interesting.

For those who need a refresher, Skylar and Plux is about the two titular heroes who are out to defend their new home. The villainous CRT is looking to take over the land and turn it into a complete wasteland. Over the course of the journey, both heroes will unlock new abilities to take on the seemingly endless minions and bring back peace.

Other features include:

  • Wield a powerful mechanical arm and whack robots to your heart's content!
  • Expand your moves with gadgets like the Jet Pack, Magnetic Glove and Time Orb!
  • Explore every nook and cranny of Clover Island and rescue its natives from CRT's imprisonment!

While the graphic novel style cutscenes look a little unimpressive, the gameplay looks sharp and the in game graphics look pretty nice. There's almost a cel-shading like design going on. Developer Right Nice Games are definitely putting the nostalgic quality of Banjo Kazooie type platformers on display. As they say on the Skylar and Plux website:

If you miss adventuring like it’s 2001, or just love colorful aesthetics, tasty upbeat music, goofy humor and collecting lots of shiny gems, Skylar & Plux: Adventure on Clover Island is for you!

If you're not sold on all the action-packed adventure found in the trailer (viewable below), maybe the ridiculous protagonist names will get to you. Where else are you going to find a Skylar Lynxe or Plux Owlsley? Plus, the bird wears goggles! Now that's entertainment!
