The 2012 action game Sleeping Dogs from publisher Square Enix became a surprise sleeper hit (no pun intended) by blending open-world action in the midst of crimes in Hong Kong, and the previously-confirmed film adaptation of the game appears to still be happening, according to one of the film’s major stars.
Actor Donnie Yen (who was most recently seen in films such as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and xXx: Return of Xander Cage) shared a brief update on the film via his personal Instagram account, stating on the film that “sometimes great things take a bit of time,” and adding that the project is “[in] motion,” as the film appears to be between pre-production and production (filming).
Alongside Yen’s statements on the film, his Instagram post also included a number of screenshots from the game, and while Yen’s exact role in the game has yet to be revealed, hopefully there is a chance that he will be portraying the protagonist from the original game, Wei Shen.
News of a movie based on Sleeping Dogs was first confirmed back in March of last year and since that time, new details on the film have been relatively quiet. However, Yen’s statement at least confirms that the film is moving along and (hopefully) we’ll see more of it in the near future.
