Project Cars Developer Slightly Mad Studios is Questionably Creating a New Console Called the 'Mad Box'

If the CEO of Slightly Mad Studios is to be believed, the developer is supposedly working on a new console that will be the most powerful ever built.

Slightly Mad Studios, the developer best known for its work on the Project Cars series, is supposedly developing a new gaming console.

As announced by the studio’s CEO Ian Bell today over on Twitter, this new hardware will be called the Mad Box and will be “the most powerful console ever built.” Quite a bold statement coming from such a small team.

In further statements given to Variety, Bell went on to say that the Mad Box will be a standalone system in the same manner that the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are. He also stated that the system will be able to support “most major VR headsets” with specs that will be equal to what a “very fast” PC will be two years from now. Bell said that they currently have the design of the Mad Box all specced out and are currently in discussions with manufacturing partners. He also expects the Mad Box to release in “three years time.”

It’s worth pointing out that this entire situation is a rather odd one and seemed borderline fake initially. Bell’s Twitter account is new as of today with his first tweets only appearing as of a few hours ago. That said, the official Slightly Mad Studios account did retweet all of Bell’s statements, seemingly lending credibility to verify Bell’s account as real.

We’ll have to wait to see more about what the Mad Box will actually entail when more specific details are given but as of now, the project seems quite ambitious. If I had to venture a guess, if this console does somehow see the light of day then it’ll likely cost far more than a traditional console and will instead mirror prices more often seen with a high-end PC.

Bell says that the initial images of the design build of the Mad Box will be made available within the next month or two. We’ll keep an eye out to see if anything further actually comes from this story over that time.
