To celebrate Sonic the Hedgehog's 30th anniversary, Sega has announced a slew of new merchandising partnerships, including the Sonic Encyclo-Speed-Ia, a new line of Funko Pop! figures, jewelry, comics, toys, clothing, pins and a partnership with Bang Energy drinks, and of course, would a video game anniversary be complete without a cool new logo?

Following in the footsteps of the likes of most other major mascot characters, the Blue Blur got a clean new logo to commemorate his 30th anniversary. Featuring a silhouette of Sonic with the 0 in 30 as the iconic loop that Sonic's feet make when he runs, the logo's certainly way past cool to say the least.

It's been a weird year for everyone. Including everyone's favorite chili dog-loving, fast-talking blue hedgehog. Originally, Sega had planned a slew of announcements and reveals this year, promising that Sonic news would break once a month.

While the merchandising and marketing is Sonic news (from a certain point of view) it's pretty clearly not what they meant. Since next year is Sonic the Hedgehog's 30th anniversary, it would stand to reason that there would be concrete game announcements and release dates. Aside from the box office success of the Sonic the Hedgehog movie that released last February, there really hasn't been much to talk about or celebrate.

Since then, however, Sega has given a vague promise that they'd be announcing new games and digital events. What exactly that entails remains to be seen, but based on the fact that fan developer Christian Whitehead hasn't produced a new Sonic game might suggest we'll be seeing the next iteration of 2D Sonic. On top of that, the main Sonic team has been relatively quiet, with spin-offs like Team Sonic Racing and two Mario and Sonic games filling in the gap since the last major 3D Sonic game, the maligned Sonic Forces.
