During a Sonic the Hedgehog panel at SXSW last month, SEGA announced Sonic Mania Plus, a definitive edition of last year’s critically acclaimed 2D Sonic game that will also be receiving a physical release. Today, SEGA gave more details about what new content will be included in this game, while also announcing that the game will release on July 17.
First off, Sonic Mania Plus brings two playable characters into the mix: Ray the Flying Squirrel and Mighty the Armadillo. Both of these characters debuted in the arcade SegaSonic the Hedgehog, but have rarely been seen since, with Mighty’s last appearance being in Knuckles’ Chaotix for the Sega 32X . As for new modes, this version of the game introduces Encore mode, which revamps the game’s zone with new layouts. Competition and Time Attack will also now allow four players, with Time Attack also receiving ghost challenges.
Those of pick up Sonic Mania Plus for $29.99 at release will gain immediate access to all of this new content. If you already own the game, you can get these new things through the Encore DLC pack, which will be available on the same day for $4.99.
You can check out the release date trailer for Sonic Mania Plus below alongside some screenshots of the new content. Sonic Mania is currently available on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, and Sonic Mania Plus will all of the same platforms on July 17.
