Sonic Team Says 2021 Will be the "Next Big Year" for the Blue Blur

Two years from now is when we'll seemingly be able to expect the next major Sonic game to arrive.

June 21, 2019

The last two major Sonic the Hedgehog games, Sonic Mania and Sonic Forces, both arrived a few years back in 2017. While there have a been a few new Sonic releases since that time, like last month’s Team Sonic Racing, those looking for a classic Sonic experience might have to wait just a couple more years.

Speaking to Game Informer recently, Sonic Team’s head Takashi Iizuka seemed to tease when we might start to see another major entry or two in the Sonic franchise. While he didn’t have a lot to say, Iizuka indicated that two years from now, in 2021, is when we’ll really start to see more of Sonic.

“2017 was a big year for Sonic. The next big year for Sonic is 2021,” Iizuka stated. “That’s the 30-year anniversary for Sonic. We are now preparing.” When asked if the 30th anniversary of the character will bring with it another major milestone game much like 2011’s Sonic Generations, Iizuka simply just said, “Maybe.”

Even though 2021 seems quite far off at the moment, there should be more than enough Sonic content to hold you over until that time. As mentioned previously, Team Sonic Racing just launched last month and is actually a ton of fun. And while 2020 has yet to have a Sonic game slated to arrive, February will see the long-awaited release of the Sonic the Hedgehog movie, which has been much talked about this year, likely for all of the wrong reasons.

As we continue to near 2021, we will, of course, start to hear a whole lot more of what Team Sonic has planned to launch next. Until that time, keep envisioning in your head what you’d want from a potential Sonic game on next-gen hardware like PS5 and Xbox Scarlett.
