Sonic the Hedgehog Actor Jim Carrey Responds to Sonic’s Redesign
The Dr. Robotnik actor opens up on the internet backlash and change of the titular hedgehog.
Earlier this year the first trailer for the Sonic the Hedgehog movie released. Before the trailer came out, we knew the design of the blue blur and the internet was already not happy.
After the negative reception of the trailer due to the design of Sonic, Jeff Fowler, the director of the film, announced that it was going to be delayed so the team could redesign the character. While a lot of people requested the redesign, it took many by surprise that it was actually happening. This is the first time a character in a film has been redesigned due to criticism.
Jim Carrey, who plays Dr. Robotnik in the film, has recently made comment on the redesign. Carrey was asked about the controversy while promoting the new season of his show Kidding during a presentation for the Television Critics Association.
“I don’t know quite how I feel about the audience being in on the creation of it. We’ll see what that entails because sometimes you find that the collective consciousness decides it wants something and then when it gets it, ‘I just wanted it, I didn’t care about it. I just jumped on the bandwagon,’ Ownership of anything is going out the window for all of us.”
As it shows, it seems that the actor is rather conflicted about the change. Executive producer Tim Miller said last month that he thinks “fans will be pleased” with the redesign. There is really no telling on how audiences will receive it until it is shown.
Sonic is an iconic video game character with a devoted fanbase. On the other side of the spectrum, Sonic is kind of a joke and meme at times, so it is really up in the air on how people will respond to the new design. As a Sonic fan myself, I really didn’t think the overhaul was necessary and I’m more worried about the vision of the movie now than I was before.
Sonic the Hedgehog is set to release on Valentine’s Day, February 14, of 2020. The film will star Ben Schwartz as Sonic, Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, and James Marsden.
