Warning: This article contains spoilers to the Sonic the Hedgehog movie.

After a rollercoaster of criticism leading up to the release of the Sonic the Hedgehog movie, it has been announced today that a sequel is currently in the works. According to Variety, director Jeff Fowler will return in his respective role along with Pat Casey and Josh Miller penning the script.

Sonic the Hedgehog went under internet backlash after seeing the blue blur in his CGI glory, leading to the film being delayed with a complete redesign of the character. The film ended up having relatively mixed reviews critically, but most positive from audiences. At release, Sonic the Hedgehog ended up being the highest-selling video game film on opening weekend in the U.S. earning approximately $57 million dollars toppling over Detective Pikachu. Currently, the film is sitting at the number two slot for the highest-grossing movie of 2020.

For those unaware, the film ends with Tails showing up looking for Sonic on Earth being the main setup for the sequel along with Dr. Eggman being remoted to a mushroom planet. There is currently no other news or release window regarding the sequel outside of existence.
