Coming off the success of a strong slate of titles like Horizon: Zero DawnUncharted: The Lost Legacy, and numerous second and third party titles, Sony has had an exceptional year for the PS4 and its other branches of hardware, with the system having surpassed a new milestone.

In a press release, Sony has announced that worldwide sales of the PS4 have cumulatively reached over 70.6 million units, as of December 3rd, 2017 (sales in this case being sell-through of systems to consumers, not "shipped" to retailers).

In addition to the console sales numbers, Sony also stated that over 617.8 million PS4 titles have been sold worldwide across retail stores and through digital sales on the PlayStation Store to date.

On another note, Sony also added that PlayStation VR -- which first launched in October of last year -- has reached over two million units sold to consumers worldwide, which Sony expressed is "based on strong momentum of PS4." Likewise, over 150 titles have been released for PlayStation VR since its launch, and over 12.2 million copies of PSVR titles have been sold worldwide across retail and digital sales on the PlayStation Store.

Sony Interactive Entertainment chairman Andrew House expressed in the release that “we are delighted that so many people are enjoying the unique entertainment proposition of PlayStation 4 and that an emerging technology like PlayStation VR continues to gain traction.”

House also added that "I cannot thank our fans and partners enough," stating that "their support, since the launch of very first PlayStation in 1994, has helped to make PlayStation one of the biggest console gaming network in the world." House also further reflected Sony's sentiment that "we will continue to work closely with partners to maintain this momentum and remain steadfast in making PS4 the best place to play.”
