Those of you who unboxed a Nintendo 3DS a year ago may remember that tiny yellow envelope that came with your new handheld. It contained a set of augmented reality cards that allowed you to insert the company’s mascots into your 3D photos. Well, not to be outdone, Sony is including six AR cards with its Vita upon launch and — get this — these things will actually be used for gameplay purposes. Yes, one of the 3DS AR cards unlocked playable software but Sony’s got a different approach.
The two titles Dave Thach shows off in the video embedded after the jump are available on the PlayStation Store free of charge. Each AR card unlocks different content on either game, which requires fewer cards for multiple effects.
Thach is the senior manager for Sony Santa Monica and walks us through the features present in Cliff Divers and Fireworks, each title containing its own unique gameplay while utilizing the same six AR cards. Additionally, in Cliff Divers players are allowed to use more than one card at a time to create custom stages once certain requirements are met. These cards are also compatible with Reality Fighters, another augmented reality game for the Vita. This title has an MSRP of $29.99. Thach didn’t specify whether these titles would be available when the First Edition Bundle goes on sale Feb. 15 or if users will have to wait until the regular release date of Feb. 22, but the latter will be the latest you Vita owners will be able to nab this software.
