Super Nintendo World, the miniature Nintendo-based theme park section of Universal Studios Hollywood, could potentially open itself up to a wider variety of Nintendo characters. In an interview published over the weekend with Gamespot, legendary game developer and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto revealed that official meetings surrounding the park's creation included discussion on including content from a variety of Nintendo's properties, specifically Splatoon.

Miyamoto seemed to indicate that the park's current Mario theme, which features the famous red-hatted plumber's friends and enemies populating the attractions, shops, and landscape, is just a start. Responding to a question about the theme, Miyamoto noted, "As you said, it is Super Nintendo World, and there was discussion about adding other IP in there like, say, Splatoon. But instead of having our focus scattered, we thought it would be best to start with something focused and make sure something that's quality and good. And so that's where we ended up starting with Mario."

While the park-within-a-park carries a very Mario-centric theme, Miyamoto pointed out that visitors who look closely will be able to find references to some of Nintendo's other popular intellectual properties, although he was not specific as to what or where.

Super Nintendo World officially opened to the public on Friday as part of the larger Universal Studios Hollywood, although invitation-only press events have let members of the media experience its atmosphere and attractions as early as December. It has already proven its mass appeal, as its website experienced a crash as the first passes went on sale in early January, which is a common occurrence associated with an overflow of web traffic. Additionally, Mark Woodbury, chairman and CEO of Univeral Parks and Resorts, confirmed this past Wednesday that the company' other North American park, Universal Studios Orlando Resort, would be getting its own Super Nintendo World, which is expected to open in 2025.

Universal also has theme parks located in Japan, China, and Singapore. The first Super Nintendo World opened at Universal Studios Japan in 2021 (with a soft opening in 2020), and Universal Studios Singapore's version of the mini-park is also scheduled to open in 2025.

What's unclear is where the additions of Splatoon-based characters, or characters from any other Nintendo IP, would fit in. Members of the press who have visited the park in California have made note of its relatively small size. Located in Universal Studios Hollywood's lower lot and packed in between its Transformers and Jurassic World sections, the general consensus from reviewers seems to be that Super Nintendo World packs a lot of quality entertainment into its confined space.
